Professor Sushila Chang
Sushila is an accomplished academic with wide international experience. She has worked in France, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and the United Kingdom in industry and academia. She holds a PhD in Cellular Biology and Toxicology from the University of Paris 7, France, Graduate Certificate in Intellectual property Law from the National University of Singapore and Bachelor of Science (Hons) from the University of London. Sushila is also a certified executive and master coach of the National Coaching Institute, Australia.
Sushila was the first Director of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore. Sushila played a lead role in the development and implementation of 7 diploma programs which are popular to today. She was then recruited by The University of Queensland(UQ), a Group of Eight University, as one of two first coordinators of the transdisciplinary Biotechnology progamme. Sushila was then appointed Professor and first Director of the Office of Undergraduate Education, The University of Queensland in 2008/9. She led the development and implementation of the UQ Advantage, the flagship program for enhancing the student experience, and many other initiatives in UQ.
In 2011, the then newly set up Singapore University of Technology and Design recruited Sushila as their first Registrar and Senior Director of Student Affairs. Sushila played a lead role in student life, residential life and student recruitment and the registry.
Sushila returned to Australia in 2013 to take up the role of Academic Dean of the Griffith University Faculty of Science, Engineering, Environment and Technology, the power house for research in Griffith University. Sushila had a wide role in managing academic programs, staff performance, internationalization, health and safety, infrastructure and many others.
In 2017, Sushila was appointed as Deputy Vice Chancellor of Cardiff Metropolitan University in Wales, United Kingdom with oversight and leadership of the 5 schools and several strategic initiatives of the university.
Besides her extensive academic career, Sushila has also worked in the food industry and has been a consultant to several food and food related companies. A research project in freshwater aquaculture won the the first prize in the National Entrepreneurship Competition awarded by the Economic Development Board, Singapore. Two spin off companies, Red Claw Lobster Research Pte Ltd ( Singapore) and Red Claw Lobster Pty Ltd (Thailand) were established. Sushila was director of both these companies.
Sushila has also led international professional organisations. Sushila was the second womanand first non -North American to be nominated and appointed to the role of Vice Chair and then Chair of the International Life Sciences Institute (ilsi.org.com) in 2008-2010 and 2010-2012 .ILSI is a global network of scientists from government, academia and industry devoted to enhancing public health with then 15 global branch offices. Its members are mostly multinational food, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and environmental companies such as Monsanto, Pfizer, Crop Science, Danone, Nestle, and others. Sushila continues to be a member of the Board of Trustees of ILSI. Sushila was also elected President from 1994-1997 and 1998 -2001 of the Singapore Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology was a member from the Singapore Academy of Sciences during this period.
Sushila is a passionate mentor and coach and is committed to ensuring that her mentees achieve their best and are happy with their success. She is also an active volunteer with several organisations in Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and UK.
